What we are using this list for
When working with BAU projects, we usually have to make some decisions at some point of time. That could be the decision to start the project (from free thoughts, for example), devote more resources to the given topic, change company policy, or make a financial commitment. Usually, there are some stakeholders on whom we base our decisions, even if they aren’t directly engaged into project we run. That’s a place to propose a final decision and ask for final feedback.
There should be some period of time before we propose a decision and make a final one. When proposed, loop as many people as possible, even using #appunite-pulse or #general. Make it visible for people to make their voice.
Once decided, also make it public on slack.
At AppUnite, everybody is allowed to make decisions that aren’t forbidden and follow the advice process. You are allowed to make any decision if:
If you follow those rules, you are allowed to make a decision. Listen actively, integrate the best advise, make a decision.
At first, it looks counterintuitive, how can I be allowed to make any decision? For decades now, most the companies have been controlling people with power due to asymmetric access to information. With innovation of internet, mobile phones, direct communication and new platforms and society adjusting behaviour to it the environment changes. We should change our assumptions about how the world works and create an environment for people to grow their ideas within a mission we have. Human beings and organizations as living systems are full of potential waiting to unfold. Building on strengths is more important than focusing on weaknesses.
How the advice process should look like in practise:
ADR is used for proposing decisions
Think about who should be in the conversation and who will be affected by the choice you have to make.
